Strategic Plan
In October 2017, the South Dakota Opioid Abuse Advisory Committee developed South Dakota’s Statewide Targeted Response to the Opioid Crisis. This plan serves as a framework for the state’s response to the opioid crisis and is updated on a regular basis through the work of the Opioid Abuse Advisory Committee and the work of the Departments of Health and Social Services.
2023 Annual Report
Federal funding was first awarded to South Dakota in 2016 to support the education and strategies against opioid abuse and misuse within the state. Since then, DOH and DSS have each applied for and successfully received additional federal opioid funds, allowing for continued service delivery, strategic focus on data-driven initiatives, and expansion of key programs supported by the work. The plan outlined in the 2023 Annual Report maximizes federal funding across three key strategies:
- Prevention and Early Identification
- Treatment and Recovery
- Response to Opioid Misuse
Efforts to Date:
In response to the priorities outlined in South Dakota’s Statewide Targeted Response to the Opioid Crisis, a number of steps have been taken to:
- Raise awareness
- Broaden access to information and services
- Expand opportunities for education and training
- Provide prevention resources and expand outreach
- Increase the number of treatment programs and resources available
